In this part of Paul’s letter to the Hebrews, he tells about the importance of Faith, and how many people in the Old Testament, through Faith, found favor with God. If you have small children, this is a great chapter to use to teach them about the necessity of Faith in the Christian walk.

Now Faith is the substance (assurance)
that things hoped for will come true ...
the evidence of things not seen.
Because by Faith the elders (ancestors) obtained a good report
(They won acceptance from God).
Through Faith we understand
that the worlds were framed by the Word of God,
so, things which are seen (tangible things)
were made of things you cannot see.
By Faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain,
which was a sign that he was righteous,
and God attested of his gifts: and by Faith,
Abel being dead still speaks.
(We still learn from him.)
Genesis 4:4

By Faith Enoch was taken to Heaven without dying,
that he would not see death; and was not found,
because God had taken him:
because during his lifetime, by Faith, he pleased God.
Genesis 5:23

You can also read the Book of Enoch which tells the many prophecies that God revealed to him.

But without Faith it is impossible to please God:
for he that comes to God must believe that He exists,
and that He rewards them that earnestly seek Him.

By Faith Noah, being warned by God
about things that hadn’t happened yet,
moved with fear, prepared an ark to save his family;
by which he condemned the world,
and became heir of the righteousness which is by Faith.
Genesis 6:13-22

By Faith Abraham,
when he was called to go out into a place
which he should later receive for an inheritance,
obeyed; and he went out,
not knowing where he was going.
Genesis 12:1-4

By Faith he sojourned (journeyed) in the land of promise,
as in a strange country, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob,
the heirs with him of the same promise:
For he looked for a city which had foundations,
whose builder and maker is God.

Through Faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive a child,
and gave birth to a child when she was past age,
because she judged Him Faithful who had promised.
Genesis 17:19, 18:11-14, 21:1-2
Therefore, there was born from one man (Abraham),
and he was nearly as good as dead (100 years old),
so many as the stars of the sky in multitude,
and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
Genesis 22:17

These all died in Faith, not having received the promises,
but having seen them afar off,
and were convinced of them,
and embraced them,
and admitted that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Genesis 12:7

For they that say such things make it clear
that they seek a country (homeland, heaven).
And truly, if they had longed to return to that country where they came from
Genesis 12:31
they might have had the chance to return.

But now they desire a better country,
that is, an heavenly home:
therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God:
for He has prepared for them a city
(The New Jerusalem).
By Faith Abraham, when he was tried (tested),
offered up Isaac:
Genesis, Chapter 22
and he that had received the promises
offered up the only (begotten) son of whom it was said,
That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
Genesis 21:12
Considering that God was able to raise him (Abraham) up from the dead;
from which place also Jesus saw him in a vision.
Luke 16:19-31

By Faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
Genesis 27:33-40, 28:1-4

By Faith Jacob, when he was a dying,
blessed both the sons of Joseph;
(Manasseh and Ephraim)
and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.
Genesis 48:1,5

By Faith Joseph, when he died,
made mention of the departing of the children of Israel from Egypt;
and gave commandment concerning his bones.
Genesis 50:24-25, Exodus 13:19

By Faith Moses, when he was born,
was hid three months of his parents,
because they saw he was a proper (godly, beautiful) child;
and they were not afraid of the king's (Pharaoh’s) commandment.
Exodus 2:1-3

By Faith Moses, when he was grown up,
refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
Exodus 2:11
Choosing to suffer affliction with the people of God,
Rather than to enjoy the temporal pleasures of sin for a little time;
he considered the reproach of Christ
greater riches than the treasures in Egypt:
for he knew that we are rewarded for our actions.

By Faith Moses left Egypt,
not fearing the wrath of the king (Pharaoh):
for he endured, because he had Faith in our invisible God.
Exodus 10:28

Through Faith he kept the Passover,
and the sprinkling of blood,
lest He that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
Exodus 12:23

By Faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land:
in which the Egyptians trying to follow, were drowned.
Exodus 14:22

By Faith the walls of Jericho fell down,
after they were circled about for seven days.
Joshua 6:20

By Faith the harlot Rahab wasn’t killed with them that didn’t believe,
when she had received the spies with peace.
Joshua 2:9, 6:23

And what shall I more say?
I wouldn’t have enough time to tell about Gideon,
Judges 7:20-21
and of Barak,
Judges 4:15-16
and of Samson,
Judges, Chapter 13-16
and of Jephthae;
Judges 11:32-33
of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
Who through Faith subdued kingdoms,
worked righteousness, obtained promises,
stopped the mouths of lions,
Daniel 6:22
quenched the violence of fire,
(Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego)
Daniel 3:23-28
escaped the edge of the sword,
out of weakness were made strong,
waxed valiant in fight,
turned to flight the armies of the heathen nations.

Women received their dead raised to life again:
(Elijah)
1 Kings 17:22
and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance (rescue);
that they might obtain a better resurrection:
And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings,
yes, and also of bonds and imprisonment:
Joseph
Genesis 39:20
Micaiah
2 Chronicles 18:26
Jeremiah
Jeremiah 37:15
John the Baptist
Matthew 4:12, Mark 1:14
Paul
2 Corinthians 11:23-27

They were stoned,
(Stephen)
Acts 7:59
they were sawn in half,
(Isaiah)
were tempted,
were slain with the sword:
they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins;
being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
(Of whom the world was not worthy:)
they wandered in deserts,
and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
David
1 Samuel 22:1
Elijah
1 Kings 19:4
And all of these people, having obtained a good report
(pleasing God) through Faith,
did not receive the promise:
because God having foreseen some better thing for us,
that they who are apart from us should not be made perfect (complete).

Why didn’t these Faithful people obtain the promise? Because the promise didn’t exist until the New Testament. Are all the people who lived before the new covenant damned then? Oh no. You could say that believers who lived before Jesus’ time, will be “grand fathered” into the promise. This will happen at the last Trumpet.
